Putter & Controller Tracking Troubleshooting

Meta: We've seen an uptick in hardware issues for older controllers where players find themselves having "stick drift" or moving in-game without touching the thumbstick. This same hardware issue can also lead to a "flickering" where the putter moves between a left/right hand as the game determines which controller to use.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Take the battery out of the uncooperative controller and use the opposite controller. If you try this path out, we recommend utilizing our "Invert Hands" settings option (listed on the 'Putter' tab of the settings), which will align you to the appropriate side. (If you're a righty using a left-handed controller, you'll still align on the right side.)
  • On the Hardware level, you can calibrate your controller to help refine your movement.
    • Navigate Settings > Devices > Controllers > Thumbstick Range and Dead Zone. Go through the steps provided at this screen to begin calibration. Recalibrating your controller can help address drifting issues on a larger level.

Ultimately, we have workarounds for these hardware tracking issues but because they are related to your physical device, we are limited in what help we can provide. For escalation of resolution, there are paths for replacing thumbstick(s) or we encourage you to reach out to Meta to see if your controllers are within warranty to be replaced.

Standard troubleshooting:

We recommend users with tracking issues to try our ‘Grip to Putt’ option! Toggling this ON means that users will need to press and hold down the ‘Trigger’ button on their controllers to activate the putter head and physically putt the ball.

Try these other tips and tricks to help clear up any tracking issues:

  • Ensure that your gameplay space is bright. Some specific lights, such as fairy lights or Christmas lights, can cause issues for the headset’s camera and present tracking issues. Highly reflective items such as windows can cause glare that also disrupts tracking.
  • The controller grip style can vary depending on the person, and some people may find they inadvertently cover up some internal controller sensors that help with tracking. Try out different grip styles.
  • On the topic of controllers, ensure that your controller battery life is good. Sometimes, when a battery is running low it can cause tracking issues.
  • Because Walkabout Mini Golf only utilizes one controller, the secondary controller can sometimes cause issues for tracking. We recommend you place your unused controller well outside your Guardian Boundary or outside the room you’re playing in. Some users will just not wake up the unused controller upon device use (Quest), or they will remove the batteries out of the unused controller.
  • On the topic of Guardian Boundaries, try completely resetting your boundary and recreating it to see if this helps with tracking issues.
  • Ensure you do not have experimental settings enabled. Certain settings such as "Lay Down Mode" for Quest can create issues with tracking.
  • Give your headset and controller(s) a good clean. Sometimes grime, dust, and other buildup can block cameras or sensors.
